The Complete Guide

Five Ways to Decorate Apparel & Products

Whether you are branding company uniforms, printing event t-shirts, or personalizing tumblers and gifts, the decoration method you pick determines how the finished item looks, how long it lasts, and how much it costs. Below we compare the five most common methods on the factors that actually matter — best uses, materials, durability, color capability, minimum quantities, cost at low versus high volume, and turnaround — and then help you decide.

1. Embroidery

What it is: Embroidery stitches your design directly into the fabric with thread. It produces a raised, textured, premium finish that signals quality and professionalism — the reason it is the go-to for corporate polos, jackets, and headwear.

Best uses: Logos on polos, dress shirts, jackets, aprons, bags and especially caps and hats. Ideal for compact logos and text rather than large, detailed images or photographs. Learn more about our embroidery service.

  • Best for: Premium corporate wear, uniforms, caps, polos and jackets
  • Materials: Most woven and knit garments, hats, bags; not ideal for very thin or stretchy fabrics
  • Durability: Excellent — lasts the life of the garment, will not crack, peel or fade
  • Color & detail: Limited fine detail and gradients; thread colors matched to your brand
  • Minimum: Low — even single pieces, plus a one-time digitizing setup

2. DTF Printing

What it is: Direct-to-Film (DTF) prints your full-color design onto a special film, then heat-presses it onto the garment. It reproduces gradients, photos and unlimited colors without the per-color setup of screen printing, which makes it perfect for short runs and complex art.

Best uses: Full-color t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and small-batch or one-off custom apparel. Great when each item needs a different design or name. See our DTF printing service.

  • Best for: Full-color, photo-quality designs and small to mid quantities
  • Materials: Cotton, polyester, blends, and most fabrics — light or dark
  • Durability: Very good — soft, flexible prints that hold up to many washes when cured properly
  • Color & detail: Excellent — unlimited colors, gradients and fine detail
  • Minimum: Very low — ideal for 1 to 50 pieces with no per-color charge

3. Screen Printing

What it is: Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil (one screen per color) onto the garment. There is a setup cost for each color, but once the screens are made, printing is fast and cheap per piece — which is why it dominates large bulk orders.

Best uses: High-volume t-shirt runs with one to four colors — team shirts, event giveaways, merch drops. Explore our custom t-shirt printing.

  • Best for: Large quantities of t-shirts with limited colors
  • Materials: Cotton and blends primarily; flat printable apparel
  • Durability: Excellent — vibrant, long-lasting prints when cured correctly
  • Color & detail: Bold, vivid color, but each added color raises setup cost
  • Minimum: Higher — cost-effective from roughly 24–50 pieces and up

4. UV Printing

What it is: UV printing jets full-color ink directly onto a surface and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light. Unlike the apparel methods above, UV printing is made for hard goods — it prints crisp, full-color graphics on items fabric methods can't touch.

Best uses: Drinkware, pens, phone cases, acrylic awards, signage, and promotional products. View our UV printing service.

  • Best for: Full-color logos on rigid, flat or cylindrical hard surfaces
  • Materials: Plastic, metal, glass, acrylic, wood and more
  • Durability: Very good — scratch- and water-resistant cured ink
  • Color & detail: Excellent — full color, gradients and photographic detail
  • Minimum: Low — works for one-offs and bulk promo runs alike

5. Laser Engraving

What it is: A focused laser etches your design permanently into the surface of the material, removing or marking the top layer. The result is a refined, monochrome, tactile mark that never fades, peels or washes off — the most permanent option of all.

Best uses: Tumblers and drinkware, metal items, wood, leather, acrylic, and high-end personalized gifts. Discover our laser engraving service.

  • Best for: Permanent, premium marks on hard materials and gifts
  • Materials: Metal, stainless tumblers, wood, leather, acrylic and slate
  • Durability: Outstanding — essentially permanent, will never fade or rub off
  • Color & detail: Sharp, fine detail; typically single-tone (etched) rather than full color
  • Minimum: Very low — perfect for one-off personalization or small batches

Quick Comparison Chart

Method Best For Color & Detail Durability Best Quantity
Embroidery Polos, caps, uniforms Limited detail, premium feel Excellent 1 to bulk
DTF Printing Full-color t-shirts & hoodies Unlimited color, fine detail Very good 1 to 50+
Screen Printing Bulk t-shirt runs Bold, few colors Excellent 24/50+ (bulk)
UV Printing Hard goods & promo items Full color on hard surfaces Very good 1 to bulk
Laser Engraving Tumblers, metal, wood, gifts Sharp, single-tone, permanent Outstanding 1 to bulk

How to Choose the Right Method

Start with the item and the material. Decorating apparel? You are choosing among embroidery, DTF and screen printing. Decorating a tumbler, pen, sign or gift? You want UV printing or laser engraving.

Then weigh artwork and quantity. For a polished corporate look on polos, jackets or caps, embroidery wins. For full-color or photo art on a handful of shirts, DTF is the most flexible and affordable. For hundreds of simple, one- or two-color shirts, screen printing gives the lowest per-piece cost. For full-color branding on hard products, choose UV printing; for a permanent, upscale mark on metal, wood or drinkware, choose laser engraving.

On turnaround: DTF, UV and laser are quick because there is little setup, making them great for small or rush jobs. Embroidery and screen printing have a setup step (digitizing or screen-making) but become fast and economical at higher volumes. When you are unsure, send us the design and quantity and we will recommend the method that gives you the best result for your budget.

Decoration Methods FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is embroidery or DTF better for company shirts?

Embroidery is best for a premium, professional look on polos, jackets and caps, and it lasts the life of the garment. DTF is better when you want full-color logos, gradients or photo-style art on t-shirts and hoodies, especially in smaller quantities. Many companies use embroidery on uniforms and DTF on event or staff t-shirts.

What's the cheapest method for 100 t-shirts?

Screen printing is usually the cheapest method at 100 t-shirts when the design has only one or two colors, because the per-shirt cost drops sharply as quantity rises. If the design is full-color or you need different sizes per shirt, DTF often wins on total cost and flexibility.

Which lasts longest?

On apparel, embroidery is the most durable because the design is stitched into the fabric and does not crack or fade. Laser engraving is essentially permanent on hard goods like metal and wood. Screen printing and DTF are very durable when cured and washed properly, typically lasting many years.

What's the best method for hats?

Embroidery is the standard and best-looking method for hats and caps. It gives a raised, textured, professional finish that holds up to weather and washing. For full-color or photo-style hat designs, a DTF or applied patch can be used instead.

Can you decorate tumblers and metal items?

Yes. Laser engraving is ideal for tumblers, drinkware, metal, wood, leather and acrylic, producing a permanent etched mark. UV printing adds full-color graphics to hard surfaces like bottles, pens, phone cases and signage. Doral Embroidery offers both in-house.
